Lincoln’s Video of the Day: The Joy of Books

I work in an independent bookstore. I don’t get paid much. It’s not going to be my career. But while it lasts, it has fostered my love of books even more. I think this video expresses this perfectly.

Author’s Note: Breaking Archetypes

Here we are — the last of the archetype series! Are you relieved? I am! Three months on the same topic?! Geez, it’s like writing a book! Anyway, onward and upward! In previous months we’ve talked about how to successfully work with archetypes. Today, I’m going to tell you what not to do. First, we’re […]

Author’s Note: 3D characters, or, how to combine archetypes

Last time I talked about some basic archetypes (I cannot stress enough how many of them there are; the more you know, the better!) and said we’d build on it this month. Well, we are! Woo hoo! Let’s talk about combining archetypes and adding traits. No one is just one archetype. When you see a […]

Lincoln’s Link of the Day: New Book, Science Ink, shows off the nerdiest tattoos you’ve ever seen

I’ve become a tattoo snob. When I got my first piece last year, a half-sleeve based on John Tenniel’s original Alice illustrations, I immediately started judging those around me. It wasn’t a conscious choice, but suddenly I was noticing bad linework and faded color where before I would have just seen a tattoo. I came […]

Author’s Note: Creating Characters, Using Archetypes

I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately. I’m sure this surprises none of you. It has been the summer of fun blockbusters! What I see over and over again are archetypes. Everyone knows what an archetype is, right? The knight in shining armor, the damsel in distress. More practically speaking, an archetype is what […]

Author’s Note: Agent Hunting!

So, last month I told you guys I had just sent off a query letter to an agent. What I skipped was finding agents to send it to, and writing up the query letter. Really, each of those two things is its own column, because each was an equal pain in the butt. I had […]

Strippable Cover Reviews: Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson

Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson The apocalypse has hit in many ways over the years. Zombies. Plague. Creeping Ice-Ages. And of course, there’s always the old stand-by favorite, Robots. We’ve seen them plod slowly through the Terminator films or swiftly dive and tear their way through clunky, barely functional ships in The Matrix. But author […]

Author’s Note: Mixing My Alcohol

They say you shouldn’t mix your alcohols, but baby, I have done exactly that. You see, I need a drink. I have just sent my query letter off to an agent, to see if it’s acceptable. That’s right. I sent a query letter to an agent. It’s the first agent I’ve approached since, oh, probably […]

Lincoln’s link of the Day: Samuel L. Jackson reading adult children’s book, Go the F–k to Sleep

Let’s be honest. If you had to choose one actor to read a book entitled Go the Fuck to Sleep who would you choose? It would be Samuel L. Jackson, wouldn’t it? If you’re not familiar, Go the Fuck to Sleep is a parody children’s book aimed at distraught parents. While I don’t have any […]

Author’s Note: On to the Details!

Holy crap, you guys, editing is going to kill me. (Melodramatic much? Naaaah, not me!) My editing process has changed since the days when I was writing mostly fanfic, simply because the length of my work has changed. While my fanfic was often short-novel length, about 50,000 words, now that I’m writing things that are […]
