Sacha Baron Cohen tries to have fun, ends up banned from Oscars (UPDATED)

Despite being a member of the Academy as well as a cast member of Best Picture nominated film Hugo, it appears that Sacha Baron Cohen won’t be attending this year’s Oscars ceremony.

Deadline reports that Cohen wanted to attend the awards ceremony in character as The Dictator but when the Academy heard, they pulled his tickets and told distributor Paramount that unless they receive assurances that he would “not to show up on the Red Carpet in costume and not to promote the movie on the Red Carpet” the actor would not be allowed at the awards. Since this isn’t going to happen, he is effectively banned.

As Paramount put it:“Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show.”

Which is too bad, since it’d be nice to have a few laughs to liven things up.

Update: Well, the Academy has given in and will allow Cohen to hang out on the red carpet as The Dictator as long as he changes before the actual ceremony.
