Sherlock to go where no consulting detective has gone before

That headline isn’t really true. Well, sort of.

The truth of the matter, as Deadline announces, is that he-of-the-most-British-name-ever, Benedict Cumberbatch, has signed on for a role in the upcoming Star Trek 2. The actor has been everywhere lately, from the second season premiere of Sherlock (which sadly won’t be in the US for a while), to roles in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and War Horse to voicing Smaug in the upcoming Hobbit films. This collaboration with JJ Abrams will hopefully begin to cement him as the capable actor that he is. No word yet on whether Cumberbatch will play a hero or villain.

Star Trek 2 is being written by Abrams with Damon Lindelof (Lost), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and will be released on May 17, 2013.
