It’s time for Desert Bus for Hope 5… and I still haven’t finished my Halloween candy!

The more money you donate, the more these folks will make fools of themselves... for the children!

Hey internet, I wanted to let you know about an event going on RIGHT THIS SECOND that is pretty near and dear to all our hearts hear at Geeking Out About. It’s a fundraising event for Child’s Play – a really wonderful charity.

“Child’s Play works in two ways. With the help of hospital staff, we set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, books, and other fun stuff for kids. By clicking on a hospital location on our map, you can view that hospital’s wish list and send a gift.

Child’s Play also receives cash donations throughout the year. With those cash donations, we purchase new consoles, peripherals, games, and more for hospitals and therapy facilities. These donations allow for children to enjoy age-appropriate entertainment, interact with their peers, friends, and family, and can provide vital distraction from an otherwise generally unpleasant experience.” (from their website)

Since 2003, Child’s Play has raised millions of dollars for 70 hospitals worldwide, and the list of hospitals they are partnered with grows every year.

But, to the crux of this post: this weekend is the 5th Anniversary of Desert Bus for Hope where popular online sketch comedy group Loading Ready Run will sit down to play the most boring game in history: Desert Bus.

But the real attraction isn’t that you can watch them play a boring game, but that, as you donate to Child’s Play through Desert Bus, you can also give the group challenges, such as singing “Modern Major General“, or “Bad Horse” …or any other song. Body parts will be waxed, heads will be shaved, and maybe some more of whatever the bus this was…

Also, during the course of the Desert Bus for Hope, there will be live auctions, silent auctions , and giveaways. Granted most of these things are for the geeky: a Doctor Who scarf , Star Wars paraphernalia, lots of video game related stuff ; there may be something there that you’ll like (I don’t really know you guys so I can’t speak to how much you may want a hand-made C’Thulu iPad case , or a crocheted stuffed pig ). Even if this isn’t your bag, you may know someone who thinks that having a Mario Mushroom Pixel Blanket would really tie the room together.

Finally, with Desert Bus for Hope, the more money that gets donated, the longer it goes on. When they began at 9 pm EST yesterday, they had to play the game (and take ridiculous requests to sing the period table of elements) for 94 hours; in 12 hours, they’ve increased that to over $27,000 dollars and were singing a Desert Bus-themed version of a song from “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.”

Desert Bus is an important time for Geeking Out About: it was during an auction for “A Girl’s Guide to Dating a Geek” that Trisha and I met in the chatroom, and went from the idea of writing a complimentary book (about a guy’s guide to dating a female geek), to the idea of a blog. So, in a sense, Desert Bus marks the anniversary for Geeking Out About, even if it didn’t finally take shape a few years later… in May.  It’s for this reason that we are super proud to offer our very first item to be auctioned off this year: A Collectible Final Fantasy Lulu Figure – the box is slightly damaged from shipping, but the figure is still in mint condition.

So, there’s my spiel, a great marathon for a great charity. If you have time to kill this weekend, or if your sysadmins at work are particularly generous, you can tune in and see people making fools of themselves. For the children.

PS: Hands off that bag of dice, nerdlings. I wants it.
