Hugh Grant joining potentially awesome Cloud Atlas

Hugh Grant has been busy lately, mostly with pushing against the phone hacking scandal. But he has picked up one high profile role, and it’s in a film that will be one of the most polarizing of next year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Grant has signed on to the Wachowski’s upcoming adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas. Having read the book myself, I’m intrigued to as to how this going to be pulled off, as it weaves in and out of six storylines and spans hundreds of years. But with some of the Wachowski’s issues with storyline (see parts 2 and 3 of The Matrix), expectations should be tempered. They are co-directing with Tom Tykwer, perhaps best known for Run Lola Run and Perfume.

Also in the cast are Tom Hanks, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Halle Berry and many more. The film is in preproduction and we’ll see how things pan out in 2012.
