The Lone Ranger falls off its horse

This is kind of incredible. I mean, this was a license to print money.

According to Deadline, Disney has pulled the plug on The Lone Ranger. This may not seem like such a surprising decision, but when you add in the winning Pirates of the Caribbean team of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski, it becomes kind of baffling. Depp was set to play Tonto to Armie Hammer’s (The Social Network) ranger, but apparently Disney balked at the budget.

It was hanging North of $230 million.

The movie was still in the casting stages with Ruth Wilson as the female lead, but apparently with the budget at least 30 million over what they were willing to spend, the studio decided to go with some of their safer bets, including the upcoming John Carter.
