Quick Cuts: The Hunger Games gets a release date, Javier Bardem may be Roland in The Dark Tower and other stories
- Get ready for the next big thing. Lionsgate has announced that the first film based on Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy will hit theaters on March 23, 2012. The young adult novels are the latest crossover craze, in the vein of Harry Potter or Twilight, and tell a story of gladiatorial games in a dystopian future, where young people from each district of a totalitarian America fight to the death. The film will be directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) (Source: The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog Exclusive)
- According to an inside source, Javier Bardem has been offered the role of Roland in The Dark Tower movies/television series by director Ron Howard himself. Apparently there is a large amount of “internal enthusiasm” that they’ve found their Roland. The actor in the role would be required to star in all three films and one of the television bridges, the second bridge covering Roland’s past and accordingly, having a younger star. However, negotiations have not officially begun and both Viggo Mortensen (my personal choice) and Christian Bale have been mentioned as well. (Source: Deadline)
- Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) has joined Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel(?) Prometheus. He will be starring opposite Noomi Rapace (Sherlock Holmes 2, The Millennium Trilogy) and will be playing an android. The film will apparently have “Alien DNA” (Source: The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog)
- Naomi Watts has joined the ever growing cast of Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. The actress will play Hoover’s secretary Helen Gandy, who worked for him for 54 years. Watts joins a cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Westwick (Children of Men), Ken Howard (Rambo), Josh Lucas (The Lincoln Lawyer), Damon Herriman, and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) (Source: Deadline)

Gyah. I would have loved for Viggo Mortensen to be Roland as well. I haven’t seen enough of Bardem’s work to form an opinion of him either way.
