Quick Cuts: Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen returning to Middle Earth, and other stories
- So it’s official. Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are back to reprise their roles as two of the most important characters in the Hobbit mythos. Still in talks are Christopher Lee and Ian Holm. (Source: Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter)
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, fresh off being nominated for a Golden Globe for their brilliant score of The Social Network, aren’t taking a break. The NIN members have signed on to score David Fincher’s next film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, this time working more traditionally, with strings and a full orchestra. We’ll believe it when we see it. (Source: Pitchfork)
- Colin Farrell is officially starring in the remake of Total Recall. The film will not be in 3D, and will begin shooting May 15. Sticking closer to the original Philip K. Dick book, We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, the new film won’t be going into space. (Source: Collider)

The Colin Farrell film sounds promising, ESPECIALLY the non-3d part. However, if it’s closer to the Dick book, why not call it something other than Total Recall. If they do that, folks will expect shooting, long-dead Martians and triple-breasted whores.
My only problem is that Dick’s works READ really well, but don’t translate to film well. Actually, they’re kind of boring. The comparison of story “Impostor” to the film is a good example. The story = riveting; The film = not so much. And don’t even get me started on “Minority Report” or “A Scanner Darkly”
