Trailer Watch: Robots Smashing Each Other Edition

Do you like robots? Do you like them punching each other? Do you enjoy robots ripping into other robots and possibly delivering cheesy one-liners in the process?

The correct answer to all of those questions is: Don’t we all?

Next summer? Whole lot of robot explosions going down in a couple of big tentpoles.

First we have Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Keeping the Pink Floyd references to a minimum, here’s the trailer.

The Autobots Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide and Sideswipe led by Optimus Prime, are back in action, taking on the evil Decepticons, who are determined to avenge their defeat in 2009’s Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. In this new movie, the Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the U.S. and Russia, and once again human Sam Witwicky has to come to the aid of his robot friends. There’s new characters too, including a new villain in the form of Shockwave, a longtime Transformers character who rules Cybertron while the Autobots and Decepticons battle it out on Earth.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is directed by Michael Bay and stars all of the usual suspects (minus Megan Fox) and hits theaters on July 1, 2011.

While this certainly appears to be inspired by a certain punchy board game, Real Steel isn’t pretending to be anything other than what it is: a movie about giant robots knocking the crap out of each other.

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Rock ‘Em…Er, Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy (Date Night, The Pink Panther) and stars Hugh Jackman. It hits theaters on October 7, 2011.

Is it me, or does the moon landing stuff from the Transformers look extra-special cheap-o?

And it probably is just me, but Real Steel just looks dumb.

Man, I’m pretty demanding of my sci-fi.
