Trailer Watch: “Dirk Gently”

I hate not knowing how I feel about something.

Earlier today, a trailer dropped for BBC4’s upcoming Dirk Gently TV movie, based on the Douglas Adams detective novel Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Stephen Mangan of “Free Agents” and “Green Wing” plays the titular character, an eccentric detective who solves his crimes based upon a firm belief in the interconnectedness of all things.  Also starring are Darren Boyd (also of “Green Wing”) and Helen Baxendale (Cordelia Gray of “An Unsuitable Job for a Woman”).

It is always a bad, bad thing to be a big fan of a book that’s about to be adapted for screen, especially if the book is by Mr. Adams.  This is at once something fans have been wanting and dreading (like ya do).  None of the names is enough to inspire either hope or fear actor-wise — but also on board are director Damon Thomas (“The First Men in the Moon”) and writer Howard Overman (“Merlin”).  A bit more assuring, certainly.

I’m curious to see how they plan to fit the entire book and all its parallel plot threads into one movie; though, for starters, the book it’s based on was itself based in a large part on Adams’s scrapped Doctor Who script “Shada” (which was both mined for “Five Doctors” footage and remade for radio by Big Finish).  So it will be interesting to see how the screen-to-print-and-back-to-screen adaptation suits.

Dirk Gently is currently in post-production and will be ready when it’s ready, I suppose.
