Comic Non-Sans: Meet the Father of Puppy Cow

Sometimes, God just isn't paying attention.

Someone at a convention a few years ago referred to me (rather mistakenly) as the busiest artist in webcomics.  This is most likely because at any one time I’ve kept anywhere from three to five projects running and updating on a regular basis.  The label is far from true, but people don’t seem to agree when I tell them.  So I’ve decided to devote this month’s Comic Non-Sans columns to artists who are genuine contenders for the title.

First up this month, Jamie “The Angry Zen Master” Noguchi, a gentleman whose name you will recognize from previous coverage of Super Art Fight.  Not only is he a regular fighter, he’s also one of the creators and major promoters.  That alone would likely knock a person out time-wise, but he maintains a thrice-weekly webcomic … and more.  And yeah, it’s the “more” bit that gets you.

After stepping down as the artist of the wildly popular Erfworld (no, seriously, there’s like some huge fans of it in my friend Emily’s guild on Moon Guard), Noguchi started up Yellow Peril, an edgy — as in properly edgy, not “ooh I’m such a politically incorrect scamp” — office romance comedy with a definite hot-blood anime/tokusatsu sensibility.  As offshoots of the comic are T-shirts and other merchandise, as well as a making-of podcast.

But that’s not all.  Noguchi also maintains Monster Cutie, a blog devoted to tutorials for both traditional and digital artists.  The blog updates somewhat irregularly, complete with videos and product references.

But that’s not all.  There’s also The Mochi A Go-Go, a look at various tasty treats he finds around town and reviews for his readers.

But that’s not all.  There’s also Angry Art Monkey, Noguchi’s sketch blog where he features everything from quickie sketches to full color pieces to sculptures.

Then there’s Puppy Cow.

And here I think I’ve lost you.

I suppose a feverishly busy mind such as his will occasionally turn out something that absolutely defies explanation, and that is most certainly Puppy Cow.  Where it came from, I don’t even know if he knows.  But it’s gained a cult following, so much so that there’s a move afoot to start making plush toys of this precious little abomination.

If you want to keep up with Jamie Noguchi — or at least make an attempt to — check out his collective, Angry Zen Master.  And if you like what you see, check out Puppy Cow’s Kickstarter page to help make this crack dream a reality.
