Arthur the Once and Future Movie; Blogger Pulls Sword from Stone to Become An Hero

Real tragic-like, oh my brothers.

Oh, dear.  I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.

An article on Moviefone has revealed a sneak peek at the filming of a new movie starring troublemaker comedian Russell Brand, slated to hit theatres sometime next year.  Well, when I say “new,” I mean actually about thirty years old.  Because Peter Baynham (the screenwriter behind Borat and Bruno) has decided it’s about time to freshen up Arthur.

Yes.  That Arthur.  The quadruple-Oscar-nominated quintessential 80s comedy starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli when she was only sort of nuts.  This time, though, Brand stars as the lovable boozer, with House of the Devil‘s Greta Gerwig taking over Liza’s role as the poor girl he falls for.  Behind this, though, are two rather respectable actresses: Jennifer Garner as the heiress Arthur is meant to marry, and Dame Helen Mirren as Arthur’s long-time nanny (replacing Sir John Gielgud as Arthur’s long-time valet).

Now, I will be the first — well, fine, third or fourth — to admit that sometimes remakes or adaptations can come out better than expected.  I can’t think of any offhand, but I’m sure it’s possible.  But even if there were a particularly good reason to modernize Arthur, is this really Baynham’s sort of project?

The new Arthur is currently filming in New York City, and is expected to premiere sometime in 2011.

    Remakes that surpassed the originals:
“Then Ten Commandments” – Both versions by DeMille
“Ocean's 11” – original directed by Lewis Milestone, remake by Steven Soderbergh.

Just to name two off the top of my head.
