Matthew Vaughn joins X-Men: First Class

Ready to see Cyclops drop the f-bomb?

While that remains unlikely, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, Kick Ass’s Matthew Vaughn has signed on to direct X-Men: First Class and the studio has given it a June 3, 2011 release date. While Vaughn has been on and off in talks with Fox, producer Bryan Singer (X-Men 1 and 2, Jack the Giant Killer) was apparently able to convince them that he is the right man for the job.

The film’s surprisingly early release date is due to a script rewrite. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor), reworked the script so that Fox feels confident about releasing it this time next year. Apart from Singer, the movie will be produced by fellow X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner and X-Men: The Last Stand writer Simon Kinberg.

The film’s plot concerns the origins of the rivalry between Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, better known as Professor X and Magneto.

Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

I’m wondering if it’ll deal at all with Magneto’s experiences during the Holocaust. Judging from the summary given, I’m doubtful.
