Nolan to mentor Superman, begins work on 3rd Batman film (update: we've been Finked)

While Marvel Comics has been leading the box office superhero rush in the past few years, rival DC appeared to be resting on their laurels, outside of the Batman franchise. After a series of “any day now, we’ll have something to announce” announcements, it seems they were just waiting for the right moment.

In an exclusive at Deadline Hollywood, Christopher Nolan, the man who erased the stench of Joel Schumacher from Batman, is not only working on a third movie starring the Dark Knight, but will also be overseeing a revamp of DC’s other heavy-hitter, Superman.

Nolan “has been asked to play a “godfather” role and ensure the Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus,” last seen in 2006’s Superman Returns. The film will not be a direct sequel to that movie, instead being a new reboot of the franchise. One of the likely reasons for bringing in Nolan is the ticking clock. In 2013, the heirs of Jerome Siegl and Joe Schuster will own all of the Superman rights and according to their attorney, Marc Toberoff, “neither DC Comics nor Warner Bros will be able to exploit any new Superman works without a license from the Siegels and Shusters.” With this kind of deadline hanging over their head, it’s no surprise that DC wanted to try for a more successful reboot of the boy in blue.

At the same time, Dark Knight screenwriters Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer have begun working on a draft for a third Batman film from an idea of Nolan’s. While we won’t likely see anything from that for a while, Nolan’s Inception will be hitting this summer, on July 16th. It should be noted that Nolan is not officially on board as the director of the next Batman film, although it seems likely he will return. As with Dark Knight, he waited until the script was finished before committing to direct the movie.

UPDATE: Apparently, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson has debunked even Chris Nolan’s involvement, telling MTV News, “We don’t have any plans about that, and as I’ve mentioned, in the coming months we’ll be making a lot of announcements about what our content plans will be. But right now, that’s nothing but rumor — and we frankly don’t say a whole lot more about rumor than that, so…”

Editor’s note: We here at Movie Make-out are duly embarrassed, having been duped by a Nikki Finke rumor — and especially so, since the site originated from the frustration of seeing so many movie news sites run with obviously suspect non-news about… a bit of Superman movie news. We’ll try not to let it happen again.
