Downey Jr. out, Daniel Craig considering 'Cowboys & Aliens'

Cowboys & Aliens

The Weird West genre, on shaky ground since 1999’s Wild Wild West, may be resuscitated by two upcoming films, Jonah Hex and Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens, both based on comics of the same name. The buzz for the second intensified when it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be reuniting with his Iron Man director  in the story of a group of settlers and Apache warriors who mount a resistance against invading aliens. Alas, he has stepped down from the project.

All is not lost, though. According to Variety, Daniel Craig is currently in talks with Favreau and Dreamworks to take over the role. The actor has worked with Dreamworks before, on Munich and Road to Perdition, and with the script for the next James Bond film still in development, he may have a hole in his schedule to fill… or maybe not. (Depending on who you ask, it’s either stalled or being fast tracked with Sam Mendes eyeing the director’s chair — unless MGM finds a new owner and quick, the latter is a bit doubtful.)

Obviously no trailer for the film yet, but you can read the graphic novel here.

Interesting. I wonder if RDjr wants to start distancing himself from action/sci-fi roles and get back to things like “Chaplin”.

I also wonder if the film will keep the anti-colonialism undertone or just go for all-out aliens vs cowboys action? Will Avatar's anti-colonialism message help or hinder this film if it ever begins production?

RDJ just did The Soloist last year (although I think it was filmed a couple of years ago). I'm sure he's enjoying the paychecks, if nothing else. He can't play Tony Stark forever, so he may as well enjoy the gravy train while it lasts, right?

He deserves it, after finally getting his shit together.
