Rambo to kill scumbags for a fifth time

Stallone_RamboAccording to Variety, Nu Image/Millennium Films and Sylvester Stallone have come to an agreement regarding the fifth installment of the Rambo franchise that re-kicked off last year: it’s totally on.

Stallone will be back to direct and star in the film, which will have John Rambo fighting human traffickers and drug lords in an attempt to save a girl who has been kidnapped at the U.S.-Mexico border.

I have to wonder, though, exactly how this newest one will be different from all the other Rambo movies or even Stallone’s upcoming work in The Expendables. There is a time and place for big, dumb, action movies and while I normally love them, I also love it when the plot makes a little bit of sense and I like the characters enough to want them to survive the next explosion.

This is why I don't like franchises. First blood = great film. Then it was all downhill. With a few notable exceptions franchises with exceptional first films only get worse as they go on.

    Examples:

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Rocky
    Pirates of the Caribbean
    The Matrix

Usually I'm inclined to agree — but while I never saw 2 or 3, the recent Rambo was awesome. AWESOME.

It's a totally different sort of movie than First Blood, but as an action movie, it's gobs of fun.

An action film about a lone, battle-hardened hero fighting human traffickers and drug lords to save a kidnapped girl? Sounds more like the plot to “Taken”, which was also a surprisingly excellent barrage of mindless violence. I don't know how much better the story would get by dumping the French locales and Liam Neeson for Mexico and Sly Stallone…

It also sounds a lot like the plot to… Rambo. :1

I for one, am looking forward to this. But i want to see Expendables NOW.

First Blood was a great film. 2 and 3 were victims of 80s and 90s excess. Rambo (4) was a great great throwback to a time where action movies were gritty and real, none of this CG laden crap with gimmicky camera tricks and the like.

Bring on more Stallone directed action films!

They did use a bit of CG in Rambo, to make the people asplode. But your point stands.
