Mamoru Oshii returns to live-action with Assault Girls

Variety has broken the news that Ghost in the Shell and Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2 filmmaker Mamoru Oshii is returning to live-action filmmaking for the first time in eight years, with Assault Girls. The film is set to star Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Meisa Kuroki and Hinako Saeki as “hunters in a desert landscape in a post-apocalyptic world. Their quarry, called ‘sand whales,’ are huge, morphing beasts.”

That sounds fine and all, but as much as I’ve loved his animated movies, his only four live-action films to date have ranged from mediocre (Avalon) to bad (The Red Spectacles, Talking Head, and Stray Dog). Unless Oshii has a bigger special effects budget and a better cinematographer than in the previous films, I have a feeling this will just feel like another self-indulgent lark than a fully fleshed-out work in its own right — and with a December 19, 2009, release date doesn’t seem likely.
