Homestar Runner creators set to adapt Monster Safari

monster_safariHomestar Runner creators Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman have signed with the Jim Henson company to expand Screen NoveltiesMonster Safari short (pictured at left) into a feature-length, stop-motion animated film.

Screen Novelties — a.k.a. Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh — is an effects/production house that has worked on Robot Chicken, Chowder, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, and the upcoming return of The Electric Company, among many other projects.

Safari started out as a pilot for Nickelodeon that apparently turned into the 5-minute 2007 short (be sure to check out this link in particular; it has several stills from the short and its production). In the Safari feature, “the Earth’s monsters come out of hiding and a pair of bumbling crypto-zoologists spring into action to save them from a ruthless big-game hunter.”

Zobel co-wrote and directed The Great World of Sound. He also has the comedy Loudermilk in development at the Jon and Dan Heder’s Greasy Entertainment and is developing the Gizmondo film at Contrafilm.

No word on a Monster Safari release date yet, but stop-motion takes a fair amount of time, so I wouldn’t start holding my breath for a couple of years, at least.
