Trailer Watch: District 9 teaser trailer (updated)

So we didn’t get a Halo movie from Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp, but we do have District 9 coming as sort of a consolation prize, a feature-length science fiction flick loosely adapted from Blomkamp’s 2005 short Alive in Joburg. (I say “consolation prize” rather facetiously, since I’m more interested in seeing something original on the big screen than a video game adaptation, no matter how awesome the game is, or how impressive the director’s previous work is. Besides, if this does well enough, it could get a Halo movie off the ground.)

A teaser trailer is up:

Check it out over at Apple if Trailer Addict’s video is stuttering too badly for you.

District 9 stars William Allen Young and Robert Hobbs, and it opens on August 14, 2009.

UPDATED (5/7): An updated trailer without the blur over the alien’s face and with subtitles is up courtesy Trailer Addict. It reveals an interesting twist from what you might expect just from the original teaser.…

Oh man, I was totally going to tell you about this, but you found it on your own. Alive in Joburg is just one of his other amazing original ideas.. I was so pumped by the trailer.

Almost certainly referencing District 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Six), it’s hard to imagine a more racially pertinent concept with regard to the setting. Looks like it could be a great critique of both the apartheid government of the pre-1990s as well the far more recent xenophobic attacks and riots in the townships…

He’s also the guy that directed the virally explosive Citroen C4 ‘Transformer’ spot, with the dancing car. You can thank my mom for that nugget. From a South African perspective, it’ll be really interesting to see the final result. I like that that the alien designs have moved away from the Cthulhu-esque mouth tentacles to the chittery mandible mouths :)

Tentacles are still included, they were just blurred out with the face in the trailer. If you read some of the supporting atmosphere material there is a notice encouraging non-humans to contact MNU if they find themselves unable to manipulate human equipment using their tentacles.

He also has made a variety of other fascinating tidbits like Tetra Vaal, and inheriting the 3d model: TempBot.

Considering I actually live in Joburg, I’m quite keen to see what they’ve got going on here. Of course, the “District 9” title might imply a shift to a Cape Town setting (hope not), since it’s also more recognizable to an international audience (right?).

From Canada anyways we just sort of think of it all as “South Africa” and have difficulty differentiating it… if they took Joburg’s look and moved it to Cape Town… well Cape Town is a more recognizable name and few people here (other than South African immigrants) would know the difference.

They did a similar thing in Indiana Jones when they went to Peru… I’m familiar with the region and was like “uh…. what?”
