Trailer Watch: Sam Mendes's Away We Go

Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) looks like he’s brightening up a bit after Revolutionary Road. His next film, Away We Go, is from a script by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida and follows a thirty-something couple played by John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph as they travel around the US trying to find the perfect place to raise their unborn child. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine O’Hara, Jeff Daniels and Allison Janney round out the cast.

When I first read about the film, the synopsis and the cast had me expecting a broad comedy — completely unlike anything Sam Mendes has done before, naturally. And while the trailer indeed reveals a gorgeous, sun-drenched comedy, it looks like it’s aiming for depth rather than breadth… or, maybe I’m just a sucker for the song playing through the trailer (Alexi Murdoch’s “All My Days”). I’ll take it, either way. Away We Go hits theaters on June 5, 2009.
