Green Lantern: First Flight animated movie coming in July

gl-first_flightIn the run-up to Casino Royale director Martin Campbell’s live-action Green Lantern movie (due December 2010), it was inevitable that Hal Jordan would get his own entry in DC’s series of animated PG-13 straight-to-video movie — and, indeed, we’ve known that it was coming for a little while now, but now it’s official, and it has a release date: Green Lantern: First Flight, is due out in a single disc DVD ($20) and a special edition on DVD ($35, two discs) and Blu-Ray ($30) on July 28, 2009.

Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) stars as Hal Jordan, with Victor Garber (Milk, Alias) as Sinestro, Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Boodikka (who?), and Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs) as Kilowog.

Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Superman Doomsday) directed from a script by Batman: Mask of the Phantasm screenwriter Alan Burnett. (If you’re still hungry for more info, Newsarama has the full specs and cast list for yaz.)

The Justice League: New Frontier adaptation, which also spotlighted Hal Jordan, didn’t win me over, because the story just felt like a Cliff’s Notes version of the original mini-series, but the new Wonder Woman entry (out today!) looks like a lot more fun, and First Flight seems to be following suit.

Now, come on, DC! I want one for the Flash! And the Ted Kord Blue Beetle! (I won’t hold my breath for that second one, though.)
