Tintin title, cast, plot details revealed for 2011

tintin-unicornOnce in limbo, the Tintin movie is definitely on track now, complete with a plotline, cast members, and a production start date. From Variety and Rope of Silicon.com, here’s what the dual press release from co-producers Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed:

Steven Spielberg will direct the first movie, to be called The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Peter Jackson is scheduled to direct a second movie, with a third in the wings to potentially be signed later.

Tintin will be played by Jamie Bell, the British fellow who charmed audiences 8 years ago as the eponymous character of Billy Elliot and grew up enough to be in Jumper with Hayden Christensen. Playing against him as the bad guy  pirate will be Daniel Craig. Other characters will be played by Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones, and Mackenzie Crook.

Unicorn‘s screenwriters are Steven Moffat (“Doctor Who”), Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) and Joe Cornish (“The Adam and Joe Show”).

Production has already gotten underway in Los Angeles, and the film is set to be released in 2011.

I actually know the plot of this book, mainly because it was the only thing translated into the English language at the library where I was living in Spain. Well, Tintin and Asterix, anyway.

This is shaping up to be something more than trite. Steven Moffat has done some excellent work on Doctor Who, and this material seems just up his alley. Interesting, too, that Jamie Bell has already worked with both Daniel Craig and Peter Jackson on previous films. Good lord! I just noticed that he’s four years OLDER than I am! He looks much younger than that, which is good for this role, I suppose.

God, that sounds incredible! Jamie Bell, the Spaced team and Stephen Moffat? Greatest combo of screenwriters and actors ever. But who do you mean by bad guy pirate? As far as I remember, there is no actual pirate in this story. Are you thinking of Captain Haddock, the bearded dude on the cover? I hope Andy Serkis isn’t gonna play him…

@S_A_T_S: According to the linked articles, Daniel Craig will be playing Red Rackham, whom Wikipedia calls a pirate and appears in the original Secret of the Unicorn.

For once it feels as if something from my childhood isn’t being exploited, it’s not very often that something you enjoyed as a kid is going to be brought to you by writers and actors you so thoroughly enjoy.

Sounds awesome. So, who’s playing Captain Haddock? Serkis? Pegg? Someone else entirely?
