Is a Veronica Mars movie getting off the ground?

iF Magazine recently spoke with Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, who had some intruiguing things to say about the long-rumored Veronica Mars film. He’s recently been working on a re-do of his old 1998 series, Cupid, but the new series order was cut down from thirteen episodes to eight episides. The silver lining to that cloud is now, according to Thomas, “I have time to write the Veronica Mars movie. But my writing the movie is half the battle. Someone else has to pay for it.”

Fortunately, “Joel Silver does have a certain pile of money. He called on me saying, ‘Can we do this now?’ Kristen wants to do it. Joel wants to do it, and I want to do it. For me, that’s the next project.”

Mars fans have had their share of dashed hopes, though; anybody familiar with the series has already head that when the series was up for cancellation, one possible chance at keeping it going was a revamp involving a jump several years into the future, featuring Ms. Mars as an FBI agent. As such, I want to make this clear: a movie is not a done deal yet. Until the movie is greenlit, I wouldn’t start holding my breath (it sounds like this is just a development deal, at best).

If it happens, though, the upcoming movie would most likely not follow the FBI route. Thomas explained, “I think it would open just days before the Hearst College Graduation. So Veronica would be sort of at the end of her college career.”

I would be happy forever if there were a VM movie. This series’ cancellation was such a disappointment for avid fans like me. Here’s to hoping, eh?
