Terrence Howard on Iron Man 2 switcheroo

howardAs you know from last week, Marvel replaced Terrence Howard’s Rhodey with Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2, citing “financial differences, among other reasons.”

Howard recently addressed this news with NPR’s Scott Simon, “It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. [The contract] just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up.”

Granted, that’s not very informative, and it doesn’t flat-out contradict the original Variety article’s “financial differences, etc.” Perhaps Howard’s and Marvel’s ideas of “good faith negotiations” don’t line up — but whatever the case, it does seem like Howard felt less than in-the-loop about the situation, which wouldn’t be out of character for the company. As Ed Norton recently told MTV News when explaining that he has no idea what may or may not be coming up in the future for the Hulk that “the minds of Marvel are sometimes opaque.… I won’t say [they’re] obtuse, but I don’t have any idea what they want to do.”

(Thanks to CHUD for the heads up.)

It’s time for a write-in campaign! Ed Norton as Banner! (Oh, and Terrence Howard as Rhodey.)

Norton’s not out of the picture!

Marvel only has a script for Thor (assuming it’s not being re-written), and however much of Iron Man 2 that Justin Theroux is done with. There’s no reason to think that Norton would not get first crack at being Banner again — it’s just that the character isn’t definitely in any upcoming movies.

Hulk (but not necessarily Banner!) will almost undoubtedly be in the Avengers movie, but we don’t even know THAT for sure.

Yeah, we know that for sure, Gordon, because of the Tony Stark cameo at the end of the Hulk.

You’re right — it’s hard to tell why Howard’s sequel didn’t work. Weird, insider Hollywood stuff that we’ll never really know. Glad it’s Cheadle though. Could’ve been Mario Van Peebles or Chris Tucker.

I’m just hesitant to say anything’s “for sure” until a script is in the can, a director is hired, and the cast is all locked in. Call me a pessimist.

I liked Howard’s Rhodey, and didn’t. he was too quiet ( i found) Rhodey, to me was always in the comics a real in your face ( due to Tony’s “problem”). Still, I hate change ups that soon.
