Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2

The Hollywood Reporter says Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard as James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man 2.

Sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

The wording in the article is a bit vague, but it seems clear that Howard is out, which is upsetting. Casting changes in the middle of a franchise are always jarring. Cheadle’s a fantastic replacement, though, so this news isn’t all bad.

While director Jon Favreau is back and Justin Theroux is busy writing the screenplay, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are still only “expected back” for the sequel. Hopefully there won’t be any more casting change-ups.…

RD jr. should take it, he made Iron man. Paltrow, tho good, it could be anyone.

Wait, Favreau’s gonna be back as the mute Happy Hogan, isn’t he??

Nobody can replace Paltrow. And as much as I love Cheadle, you’re right. Recasting this early into the franchise is troubling.

Watch, now RDJr will bail, Jake Gyllenhall will pick up the role, and we’ll have “Brokeback Motherfucking Iron Man”. Keep it up and “Iron Man 2” will make “Speed 2” look like “The Godfather Part II.”

Besides, Graehaus, what if they replaced Paltrow with Rachel Bilson? Since Pepper Potts can be played by anyone, why not Bilson? Why not Tina Majorino from “Napoleon Dynamite”.

Why not give actresses credit where it’s deserved?

Honestly? I never really liked Howard in Iron Man, so this doesn’t really bother me.

I agree, he was alittle wimpy it seems, to what Rhodey was like in the comic. Paltrow did great, but most female parts in comic movies, are very malleable. Again, it would be nice to have the rest of the crew back.

@MaskedVigilante: ….Rachel Bilson looks like a blow pop. Her head is huuuuuge!

I never like Terrence Howard in anything, and I especially didn’t like him as Rhodey; he did come off rather effeminate, but only part of that is due to writing. I hate Terrance Howard so much. He did seem excited in interviews I’d seen as far as being War Machine in later movies, but Howard is notoriously weird and may have had some strange demands ($, lines, closeups, what have you). Also, you never know when a (bizarre) actor will just pick something different than a guaranteed success and moneymaker “just because” (see Katie Holmes, The Dark Knight, and Mad Money).

It only bugs me because 1. he seemed happy to do Iron Man, and it is one of very few movies he was in where Howard wasn’t distractingly annoying, and 2. I don’t like it when I’m expected to suspend my disbelief and pretend that two actors playing the same character in consecutive films with the setting and release date within a few years of each other are part of the same continuity.
