Johnny Depp update: more Jack Sparrow, the Mad Hatter and… Tonto?
Coming Soon has compiled a slew of reports on Johnny Depp’s slate: he’s returning as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (which earlier reports — rumors, really — have said will be free of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley), he’s definitely playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (which we’ve already heard about, but it’s official now), and he’s signed on to play Tonto in a redo of The Lone Ranger — an origin story, scripted by Pirates screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.
Depp’s 1/4 Cherokee, but I sort of wish they’d gone full-blood on this. Ah well. The real question, then, is who’s the Lone Ranger?! Hopefully somebody who will have some real screen presence opposite Depp, unlike Bloom.

The Tonto thing throws me, hopefully they’ll try and turn the concept a little and cast someone who isn’t white as the Lone Ranger.

Oh I seriously doubt that.

I think he could pull it off, with the 1/4 he does have a native American look. Anyways, he is a draw now, so I wonder, who is in for the Ranger?

The current rumors say George Clooney. We haven’t mentioned that, because I have my doubts about the rumors’ validity — it comes from an “unnamed insider,” quoted in the British tabloid, The Sun.

No more Pirates — PLEASE!! No more Tim Burton remakes of classics, and no George Clooney/Johnny Depp Lone Ranger/Tonto. Terrible all around.
