Almodóvar and Cruz Embrace (again)

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the North American rights to Talk to Her writer-director Pedro Almodóvar’s next project, Broken Embraces, which stars his Volver star Penelope Cruz.

The story revolves around a four-person love story and “touches on many genres,” including thriller, according to Almodóvar. Cruz apparently stars as a “would-be actress from Spain’s provinces who is pursued by an unscrupulous financier.”

Almodóvar describes the film as “the most novel-like story I have written to date” and says its 1950s American film noir aesthetic was partially inspired by a series of migraines that made him sensitive to bright lights.

Broken Embraces is currently filming in Madrid and the Canary Islands, targeting a March 2009 release in Spain, followed by a limited November release on these shores.
