Trailer Watch: Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen in Appaloosa

The trailer for director and star Ed Harris’s Appaloosa is online thanks to Trailer Addict.

In the film, which is based on the novel by Robert B. Parker, Harris and his History of Violence co-star Viggo Mortensen play two men, Cole (Harris) and Hitch (Mortensen), hired to take down a corrupt rancher, Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) who ordered the deaths of Appaloosa’s previous marshal and his deputy. Renée Zellweger rounds out the cast as “an attractive widow who disrupts their plans” (according to Variety).

The film looks moody, if a bit brightly shot for the dark tone (which could easily be from a poorly mastered digital file and not indicative of the film), and Harris has the typical actor-director problem — at least to my eye — of paying more attention to actors than shot framing, but the absolutely brilliant cast and the promise of one of the bloodiest Westerns ever made make this a welcome addition to the genre’s latest resurrection.

Renaissance man Ed Harris also adapted the screenplay with Robert Knott. The film hits limited release on October 3rd. (Thank for the heads-up, Trish.)

Mortensen, for his part is looking to have a hell of a year. Between this and the upcoming Cormac McCarthy adaptation of The Road by director John Hillcoat (The Proposition), which sees its first still released in USA Today today.
