Trailer Watch: The Day the Earth Stood Still (updated)

A trailer for screenwriter David Scarpa (The Last Castle) and Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson’s reimagining of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still has hit YouTube, and it’s apparently a much, much more liberal reimagining than I was expecting.

It seems to launch from basically the same premise that an alien visitor named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) comes to earth to warn us about… something, but then this film seems to go off in a totally different direction.

As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor’s appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson (Jaden Smith) get caught up in his mission — and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described “friend to the Earth.” (Source: Coming Soon)

The trailer is pretty spooky, and even on YouTube the effects look well-done, so I guess I can get over the fact that they’re basically just taking the title and a couple of characters’ names and doing something new-ish (EDIT: And apparently Gort, above). On the plus side, this one doesn’t look like it will have the spaceship land in Washington DC and be kept under guard by two army guys. Two.

The Day the Earth Stool Still Again stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bats, and it opens December 12. I have a hunch this trailer wasn’t supposed to be officially released like this, though, so it may disapper soon.

UPDATE (7/4): Yup, it’s gone. You snooze, you lose!

UPDATE (7/6): The trailer has gone up — officially this time — at Apple, in gorgeous Quicktime, and MTV has a Q&A with the film’s director, Scott Derrickson.

I’ll be skeptical right up until the end. I enjoyed the glimpse of Gort at the end, if thats what it was. But yeah, essentially looks like a whole different movie.
