Zach Snyder set to direct Guardians of Ga'Hoole animated kid-flick

Variety has broken the news that 300 and Watchmen director Zach Snyder has signed with Village Roadshow to direct a feature-length animated version of The Guardians of Ga’Hoole children’s book series by Kathryn Lasky, from a script by John Orloff (A Mighty Heart) and John Collee (Master and Commander).

Variety describes the film as “set in the Forest of Tyto, where Barn Owls live in peace until their kingdom is threatened by an evil that could destroy their home.” While it’s not clear if the film will combine more than one book or adapt only the first, the synopsis (from Lasky’s website) for The Capture, the first book of the series (currently on #14), seems to line up with that. As Lasky’s website describes it:

When Soren, a Barn Owl, is pushed from his family’s nest by his older brother, he is rescued from certain death on the forest floor by agents from St. Aggie’s, a mysterious school for orphaned owls. When Soren arrives at St. Aggie’s, he suspects there is more to the school than meets the eye. He and his new friend, the clever and scrappy Gylfie, find out that St. Aggie’s is more sinister than they could have imagined. Soren and Gylfie devise a way to flee the dangerous school and warn owls everywhere about the dangers that lurk in the forest. Together, these owls must find their way through a difficult and perilous journey, in order to save owlkind from the evil plots being hatched at St. Aggies.

Animal Logic (Happy Feet) will handle the animation chores. While Snyder has not yet directed an animated film, he will most likely have the animated “Tales from the Black Freighter” segment for Watchmen under his belt long before Guardians gets into high gear… and let’s face it, 300 was pretty much a cartoon anyway. And for (over-grown) children.

The film is being fast-tracked for release in 2009 or 2010, leaving some question as to where (if at all) another project he’s attached to, the Afghanistan war film The Last Photograph, will fit into his schedule.

So excited to learn up an upcoming movie. Although I do not fit into the age group of children I have been completely fascinated by the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series. Kathryn Lasky has painted an extraordinary picture with words and I can’t wait to see the animated project.
