Tobey Maguire wants women to Marry Him!

Variety reports that Warner Independent and Tobey Maguire’s Maguire Entertainment have picked up the rights to Lori Gottlieb’s Atlantic Monthly article, “Marry Him! The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough.” Gottlieb, a 40 year old single mother, freelance journalist, and author (Stick Figure: A Diary of My Former Self), is turning the article into a book called Marry Him! Finding Mr. Real for Dutton; the acquisition includes film rights to both the book and the article.

In the AM article, Gottlieb proposes that women take a different tack about marriage: settling. “That’s right,” she says. “Don’t worry about passion or intense connection. Don’t nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling ‘Bravo!’ in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastucture in place to have a family, settling is the way to go.”

There’s no real narrative in the “Marry Him!” article, but I’d bet money this is being developed as a romantic comedy, despite the anti-romantic premise. For more on the article and Gottlieb, check out these NPR pieces.
