Quick Cuts: Bourne 4 is "news" to Greengrass; Tetro, Parnassus

Empire quotes Paul Greengrass from Sony Ericsson Empire Awards red carpet responding to last week’s word that a fourth Bourne was as good as greenlit: "It’s news to me. I think the truth is that it’s a very well loved franchise, but we’re in the process of trying to work out what kind of film you could make.… You don’t want to do that when you feel like you’ve got to make it and none of us need to, so that’s where we are."

Bourne star Matt Damon’s own response at the same event: "We’ve just kind of been amused by the whole thing. I think it’s one of these stories that has a life of it’s own. Not that we’re against it; we’re all for doing a fourth movie but it means coming up with a good story. There are a lot of things that would have to happen before we would sign up for it."

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter note that Vincent Gallo has joined Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, The Sea Inside) and Maribel Verdu (Y tu mama tambien, Pan’s Labyrinth) as the title character in Francis Ford Coppola’s next self-financed project, Tetro. The film revolves around a family in Buenos Aires "marred by tragedy and betrayal."

Coppola’s recent, self-financed, self-adapted and self-directed effort, Youth Without Youth (starring Tim Roth) was one of the most achingly beautiful films I saw last year… and also one of the most frustrating, with the sight and sound undermined almost completely by an wretched script. Still, the beauty outweighed the bad enough that I’m very much interested in seeing what else this new, rejuvenated Coppola has in store for us. Youth‘s cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. and composer Osvaldo Golijov, both of whom did absolutely breathtaking work on the flick, are in on the production as well. Tetro is aiming for a 2009 release. Youth Without Youth hits the video store on May 13.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that The Imagainarium of Doctor Parnassus is shooting again, with the producers confirming (officially, for the first time that I’ve seen) that Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell are filling in the missing pieces of Ledger’s role.

So correct me if I’m wrong, but Imagainarium will be taking the “Doctor Who” approach to Ledger’s character?

Um… from what I’ve read, there are a few points where Ledger falls through a magic mirror or goes into another “world” of some sort, and at these moments, Ledger could “transform” into one of the other actors.

They’ve said they can use ALL of Ledger’s performance to date, so I’m guessing that there were only a few key scenes left to shoot.

So, sort of like a Doctor Who thing, I guess?
