John Landis set to direct William Gaines biopic

Newsarama has run a press release (from whom, I’m not exactly certain) announcing that John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers) has signed to direct Ghoulishly Yours, Wiliam M. Gaines, a biopic of the EC Comics and Mad Magazine mastermind. Landis is developing the project with screenwriter Joel Eisenberg (Hollywood Vampyr).

As an armchair comics historian of sorts, this is particularly interesting to me because it’s bound to have cameos by a wealth of comics greats, and because the hullabaloo surrounding the 1954 Senate subcommittee into juvenile deliquency’s investigation will have to play a pivotal role in the film, but Joel Eisenberg’s scant credits (Hollywood Vampyr and… uh… not much else) are not very encouraging. Still, if whatever draft of the script Landis saw was absolute shit, he probably wouldn’t have signed in the first place… or would he?

(For the curious, Gerard Jones’ engaging history, Men of Tomorrow, covers this era rather well, although it’s not the focus of the book.)
