Casey Affleck meet The Kind One

The Kind One book coverVariety reports that Casey Affleck is attached to star in the 1930’s noir drama, The Kind One, an adaptation of Tom Epperson’s novel of the same name, which hit bookstores on January 22. Centering around an amnesiac who comes to work for “a mobster — a sadistic killer given the nickname, ‘The Kind One’ — and (finds himself) falling in love with the thug’s girlfriend.” Epperson, who has previously written The Gift and One False Move with Billy Bob Thornton, will adapt the screenplay himself, after the writers strike ends.

Amnesia? Really? But the novel has been well received, with Publisher’s Weekly saying that “while this book lacks the depth of James Ellroy’s L.A. noir novels, it’s an impressive debut and deserves to be followed by more,“ and the LA Times concluding, “To be sure, it could be a fine film, but the novel itself is of the highest caliber in its genre and makes the leap into literature, as do the best works in all genres.”
